Seeing the images of the Syrian refugees over the last few days has been heart wrenching and I am sure, like you, I have been asking God ‘What can I do about this terrible situation?’ A quick look round the Baptist Union Website will assure us that Baptists worldwide are doing all they can to help, but what can we do in our church? Obviously we can pray, give money to aid organisations such as BMS and Tearfund, get involved with local charities such as Refugee Action Kingston supporting refugees, or write to our MP or the Prime Minister urging them to do something. But, could we do more? One Baptist organisation has pointed out that if every one of the 10,000 churches in Britain could provide a bed for just five refugees then 50,000 would be housed! That’s the challenge, we can sit and sympathise, be horrified from afar , but are we prepared to take a refugee temporarily into our home? Or foster a refugee child? What would God have us do? Perhaps at our next Church meeting we can spend time in prayer asking God that very question.
