I have spent the last two weeks having a great break in the Trevisio region of Northern Italy. One of the things that struck me the most, was that every small town and village had a huge church with a large free standing bell tower, showing how strong Christianity has been in the past. Sadly, today these great buildings which were once filled and the centres of the community now often have small congregations and survive mainly as art galleries for tourists. The era of 'Christendom' (a time where Christian faith was the centre of every community) is over, we live in a different world. Here too we recognise that the days when everyone automatically attended church are gone. If people are to know Jesus as their friend we have to go to them, sharing the good news of knowing Jesus in relevant creative ways. A challenge, but when we consider that God took just small group of disciples and used them to spread the good news all over the world, we can look to them and be encouraged.
